The poem Whos for the game. Essay - 1102 Words

The poem Whos for the game. Who would much rather come back with a crutch, than lie low and be out of the fun? Throughout the poem Whos for the game, Jessie Pope convinces many soldiers to go to war by asking questions in every stanza. Whos for the game, the biggest thetas played, the red crashing game of a fight?, she asks the reader in an excited tone, allowing the soldier to have a very positive effect on war. Who wants to play in this fight?, as if to say that the idea of war was nothing more than a boxing game, which was a common sport in the era of world war two. Most classes (even those who were rich) had more or less of an idea on the rules concerning this particular sport, and were familiar with it. The†¦show more content†¦The language of Jessie Pope is very informal as it is directed to young men, who in the era of World war two were very young (aged 16 and over) and uneducated. Who knows it wont be a picnic - not much -. This use of improper slang language could attract the attention of the young and uneducated man partially because she shares the same common speech with him making him feel more comfortable with the poem. Less able soldiers may raise their heads in marvel to the poem purely due to the continuous tempo. Use of the word lads, is what a higher figure of authority would call a boy e.g. a mother or father. This is showing that she has authority and is telling the boys what to do rather than giving them an option. Owen, unlike Pope has used similes to give a more effective description of how the soldiers feel and look like. Drunk with fatigue, deaf even to the hoots, Owen suggests that as alcohol makes one drunk and unbalanced on the feet, so does the large amounts of fatigue that the soldiers have received. Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud, Owen uses the word cancer as he feels that there is nothing that can stop the man from dying, a small glimmer of hope but other than that it seems to be incurable. He has also used visual and sound effects rather than rhyme. If you could hear at ,every jolt, the blood, using the world jolt he gives aShow MoreRelated Jessie Popes Attitude toward War in the Poem Whos For the Game1196 Words   |  5 Pages Jessie Pope was a journalist who wrote recruitment poems for the Daily Mail during the First World War. Although the goals of the residential schools changed over time, one thing always stayed the same, the genocide of the Native culture. There has already been steps to help these children that faced the abuse of the residential schools. Prime Minister Stephen Harper approved the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement and a total of $1.9 billion in payments to former students (Anderson, 2012). Also, the Agreement promised $60 million for a five-year Truth and Reconciliation Commission and $145 million for commemoration and healing events (Residential Schools Settlement, 2008). Stairway to Heaven Analysis free essay sample

Stairway to Heaven Is a song that appears to have a little bit of everything that one would look for In music. Although It ;s greatly varied with many tempos and rhythms, it still produces a sound that people find enjoyable and among the most popular. As mentioned before, Stairway to Heaven can be divided into a number of sections. The first section lasts for about the first two minutes of the song. In this section, the dynamic is piano-like and the tempo is quite slow, ranging from largo to adagio. An acoustic guitar plays a phrase that Is repeated and continued as lead anger Robert Plant begins his vocals about fifty seconds Into the song. An electric guitar then changes the tune which is repeated in a strophic form manner and also with an adagio tempo. In total, this slow-moving section lasts for about four minutes. The second section of the song begins with the introduction of drums to accompany the electric guitar and vocals. We will write a custom essay sample on Stairway to Heaven Analysis or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page This section is faster than the first, having a moderate tempo. The previous tune is still played albeit with some variation and a more lively sound. This includes the vocals, which also move faster with the Instruments and sing a variation of the first sections vocals. There is still a strophic form contained in the second section, although the chorus is represented by the instruments rather than singing. About five and a half minutes into the song, the rhythm and melody of the song changes again. This next section contains no vocals, only the sounds of electric guitar and drums. A guitar solo played in an allegretto-allegro form dominates the section, which Is somewhat syncopated In the first half. The second half of the section Is more organized, with a rondo form presented as BACKED and played by two electric guitars. In addition, the dynamic has dramatically changed from the beginning; it is no longer a soft rhythm but more similar to a mezzo forte dynamic. The final section of the song brings back vocals and a much faster tempo than the previous sections. The guitar now plays a hard rock phrase that repeats Itself In the background of the vocals. The guitar and vocals go back and forth in ABA form for about forty seconds. Then, in the closing seconds of the song, one guitar plays a flowing phrase while another accompanies it with its win tune until the last line of the song is sung in a slow and soft tempo. The song is composed of several forms. One is strophic form; while not having a textual chorus, the song contains an Instrumental phrase that acts like a chorus In the first half of the song. There are also many rhythm for more than a couple of minutes. For all the sections of the song, there is polyphony among the vocals and instruments. Robert Plant sings his lines as if they Nerve independent of the guitars, only being consistent with the pace but not the withy or pitches. The sections of the song, though vastly different, tend to transition to each other very well. The guitar is responsible for providing a bridge to each section, quietly changing the tempo and tune in between sections. The song is entirely in duple meter. This is easier to tell in the first couple sections of the song, where the guitar plays one quarter note after another in an adagio tempo. It is also in major form, especially the last sections. Although the first half of the song is slow and soft, it would still be insider to be in major mode based on the definition of the major key in the Nesters world. The beat of the song is hardly present in the first half because of the soft notes of the acoustic and electric guitar. However, as the transition from acoustic to hard rock is made, the beats presence is greatly felt during the guitar solo and the last section of the song. Guitar and drums are the dominant instruments used in the song. It contains both acoustic and electric guitar, not often seen in songs from the sass-ass. The drums are only present in the second half of he song, and its introduction signaled the transition from alternative to rock. The acoustic guitar is played during the intro to set up the rhythm for the song and is continued during the first vocal lines. This paves the way for the electric guitar to play a different tune with the same quiet feel. Then, during the second section, it gets faster and begins to sound more like a rock song. As it goes on, it changes tempo and rhythm and is eventually played fast and with passion. In addition, one is able to determine which notes the guitar will play as it is more organized than the earlier parts of the song where it was playing all different notes with different pitches and tempo.

Analysis of The Cool Web by Robert Graves Essay Essay Example

Analysis of The Cool Web by Robert Graves Essay Essay Example Analysis of The Cool Web by Robert Graves Essay Essay Analysis of The Cool Web by Robert Graves Essay Essay Why is the rubric of the verse form â€Å"The cool web† ? Give a ground for your reply. The verse form discusses an adult’s sensitivity to utilize lingual sleight to avoid the effects of utmost emotion. The rubric combines two words. â€Å"cool† and â€Å"web† . each of which evokes a strong feeling. to make a 3rd even more redolent image. There are many English looks which use the word â€Å"cool† to convey quashing emotion. This use is similar to utilizing â€Å"calm† : â€Å"cool down† . â€Å"don’t lose your cool† . â€Å"go and cool off† . â€Å"cool it! † and so on. Even the slang reading of â€Å"cool† in the sense of stylish or sophisticated conjures up the thought of a relaxed and insouciant attitude. In the context of the verse form. â€Å"cool† can be seen as synonymous with a deficiency of passion and an addition of self-denial. â€Å"Web† is used to convey the sense of being enveloped by a bed which inhibits freedom. Graves could hold used â€Å"net† or â€Å"mesh† . nevertheless those words lack the sinister intension of the most common usage of â€Å"web† : that of a â€Å"spider’s web† . In this sense. there is an air of exposure and threat ; the spider’s quarry has non chosen to be caught in the web. but is ensnared however. The combination of â€Å"cool† and â€Å"web† creates an image of forced calm. The â€Å"cool web† is a lingual leukotomy which life imposes on world. What is the consequence of the repeat of ‘hot’ and ‘dreadful’ in the first stanza? The first stanza creates a threatening atmosphere. The adjectives used are intense: the twenty-four hours is non warm. it is hot ; the eventide is non dark. but black ; the soldiers are full of apprehension. non merely dismaying. ( Although now used in the same manner as terrorization. â€Å"dreadful† truly depict a greater degree of terror. ) This development of threat is further emphasised by the repeat of the â€Å"hot† and â€Å"dreadful† . The point is driven place to the reader. If Graves had used equivalent word – vesicating for â€Å"hot† and scaring for â€Å"dreadful† – in the 2nd cases of each. the significance would be basically unchanged. However. the sound and beat of the stanza would be significantly affected. The consequence is besides assisted by reiterating non merely â€Å"hot† . but the vowel rhyme and initial rhyme of the phrase â€Å"how hot† . The repeat and accent of â€Å"hot† in lines 1 and 2 besides provides contrast between the word â€Å"cool† in the rubric and â€Å"chill† in line 5. â€Å"Cool† and â€Å"coldly† are besides used in the organic structure of the verse form in contrast to â€Å"hot† . ( This accent through repeat is used a figure of times: in the 2nd stanza with â€Å"spell† ; in line 10 with â€Å"too much† and in the last stanza with â€Å"facing†. ) Who are ‘we’ in the 2nd stanza ( line 5 ) ? The usage of â€Å"but† at the beginning of line 5 contrasts â€Å"we† from the kids of the first stanza and presumptively Graves hence means grownups. Adults have a more sophisticated bid of linguistic communication with which to construe events. Children are direct in their attack to the universe and do non try to befog world for any ground. On run intoing an fleshy individual. a immature kid will cheerfully inquire them why they are so fat. An grownup would be improbable to initiate the topic at all. Children merely province what they think ; grownups use euphemisms and oblique vocabulary to guard off unwelcome emotions. Remark on the usage of: The adjectives ‘cruel’ to depict the rose’s aroma and ‘overhanging’ to depict the dark ( lines 6 and 7 ) . The reader is jolted as these adjectives are associated with unfamiliar topics. This is a signifier of highlighting to pull attending to the linguistic communication of the verse form. The usage of â€Å"cruel† to depict the aroma of a rose is particularly clashing. Almost without exclusion the rose is a symbol of love affair and love. non one of inhuman treatment. Graves seems to be connoting that anything that intrudes – even something pleasant – is obnoxious and to be â€Å"dulled† . By depicting the dark as â€Å"overhanging† Graves refers to the sense of bullying. of something unexpected looming over us. The poet so tells us that this should – and can be – be spelled off as unwanted. The verb ‘spell’ in the phrase ‘we enchantment away’ ( lines 7 and 8 ) Graves exploits a dual significance of â€Å"spell† to entwine the thoughts of linguistic communication and hocus-pocus. In the lingual context â€Å"spell† means to organize a word by set uping its component letters in the right order. ‘Spell† besides means to act upon person or something by agencies of charming powers. In this manner. the poet concentrates a figure of images into a individual word. An adult’s desire to belie world is a signifier of charming enchantment. but it requires the ability to spell words. ( Graves besides uses this technique in line 1 by depicting kids as â€Å"dumb† . This could intend that they are stupid and hence unable to pull strings and falsify the universe. It could besides intend that kids have no lingual module as in â€Å"deaf and dumb. † Of class. he means both. ) Explain how. in your sentiment. ‘the cool web’ may protect one against ‘too much joy or excessively much fear’ ( lines 5 to 11 ) . â€Å"The cool web† of linguistic communication is used to rationalize utmost emotions. Alternatively of responding instinctively to a state of affairs. we can submerge it in long-winded accounts. From dais to parliament. and from attorney to liar. we use linguistic communication to falsify world to accommodate ourselves. It is done linguistic communication that we can carry ourselves that the noise we hear in the dark is merely the cat and non a violent burglar. This is the footing for Graves’s mention to withdrawing from â€Å"too much fright. † Less obvious is the desire to protect ourselves from â€Å"too much joy† . a status that would look to be desirable. Possibly the poet believes that we are unable to get by adequately with either extreme of luck. There are a figure of superstitious notions in this respect such as labelling something as being â€Å"too good to be true† . It may be that Graves is proposing that we subconsciously know that we can’t prolong a province of delectation for long and that the hurting of the resulting letdown is non deserving the minute of joy. It reflects a low-risk paradigm where we would predate the highs to avoid the subsequent inevitable depressions. What indicants are at that place in stanza 4 to demo us what the speaker’s attitude is towards such protection? The phrases â€Å"self-possession† and â€Å"throwing off† show us that the talker believes that the protection which linguistic communication offers is an infliction and non a natural province of personal businesss. He notes that this implemented state of affairs controls us for our whole life until we die. While connoting that this protection is a load. Graves besides tells us that without it we would travel huffy. In other words. this protection is a necessary immorality. Why do mentions to the twenty-four hours. the rose. the dark and the soldiers recur throughout the verse form? These words occur in the first. 2nd and 4th ( last ) stanzas. The repeat in the 2nd stanza and the 4th stanza fulfil different intents. The mention in the 2nd stanza forms the footing for a contrast with the initial mention in the first stanza. In the first stanza these objects are described via a child’s simple mentality: hot and awful. In the 2nd stanza the same words are described via an adult’s more complex. language-distorted position. The last stanza has a different signifier than the first three ; it breaks a form of 4-line stanzas and. by making so. demands excess attending from the reader. In this last stanza the words â€Å"day† . â€Å"rose† . â€Å"night† and â€Å"drums† are listed merely without adjectives. This neatly reminds the reader of the beginning of the verse form and completes the comparing between kids and grownups. and their differing usage of linguistic communication. Briefly province the speaker’s decision about the function of linguistic communication in our lives ( lines 13 to 18 ) . The talker concludes that we need linguistic communication to protect ourselves from the world of life. Graves provinces that without the capacity for carrying ourselves that state of affairss are non what they appear. we would happen it impossible to get by and would travel huffy. The enunciation ( pick of words ) . construction. beat and tone of the first and last stanzas are markedly different. What do you believe the intent of these differences is? The first three stanzas have a comparatively simple rhyme strategy of A B C C. The consequence of lines 3 and 4 of each of these stanzas rhyming is that each stanza is concluded steadfastly. Three stanzas with the same construction creates a form and an outlook that the following stanza will be the same. The fact that it is non is a surprise and a type of highlighting. The last stanza has a rime of A B C D C D and this difference in construction alerts the reader and demands extra attending. This warning is welcome as the message in the last stanza is far more direct than antecedently where metaphor and allusion are used. The last line provinces unambiguously â€Å"we shall travel huffy no uncertainty. † It is in this last stanza that Graves delivers his opinion on our usage of linguistic communication.

Disaster Recovery Plan for Home Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Disaster Recovery Plan for Home - Assignment Example The laptop is used for school assignments, emails, contains e-books and an electronic address book (Rittinghouse & James 12). Each of these assets will need a recovery window. This simply means how long one can do without the access to the resource. For example, the parents can do without email for about 6 hours. For the laptop, if one is in school, then the recovery window for the assignments and school assignments may be less than when on vacation. The next step is to define the recovery solution. Here, the major question is, how will each use of the asset be recovered? As we are dealing with data, there will be need for a disk back up for all the information on the desktop and the laptop. Dat replication can also be used where this is done at an offsite. Each asset based on its value, should have a recovery window and the appropriate recovery solution. For example, the emails on the desktop are through Miscrosoft Outlook. Microsoft offers its exchange hosted continuity as backup. The draft plan needs to be put down on paper, defining the assets and how they will be protected. The plan needs to be commun icated to all those who use the assets. The users will be aware of how to asses and use the various applications in case of disaster. The plan needs to be tested and refined, and retested to ensure that it can be implemented in case of a disaster (Rittinghouse & James

SOCIAL EFFECTS OF HURRICANE KATRINA Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

SOCIAL EFFECTS OF HURRICANE KATRINA - Essay Example After some days of disaster, the flood water gradually went down so that officials could identify the losses caused by the Katrina. Although the deaths had been estimated as 10,000 in New Orleans, the actual numbers were much more than that. Dead bodies were found even after six months from the disaster. Louisiana lost 1,080 people out of the confirmed deaths whereas it was more than 200 in the case of Mississippi. The elderly people had been mainly struck by the disaster and 75% of them lost their life out of 15% elderly population of New Orleans (66-67). In addition to the massive deaths, there were countless people who got seriously injured. At the same time, many people missed their family members and they did not get any information about their loved ones. Similarly, huge numbers of animals, birds and other pets also perished. Although the rescue volunteers had saved number of animals from the damaged building parts, they could not properly handover these animals to their master s. The intensity of the disaster was immeasurable for it destroyed acres of land and trees and thereby a wide range of mammals and reptiles lost their habitats. The violent attack of Katrina shattered a large number of people who had mainly depended on fishing and forestry. Gallons of oil spilled across various parts of the country including Gulf coast and neighborhoods of St. Bernard Parish (Palser). The oil components and other chemicals were mixed together and formed different toxic compounds. Scientists reported that this mixture compounds would affect the ecosystem for decades. The remnants of the buildings caused many allergic reactions and breathing problems. Similarly, large amounts of sludge formed across the affected parts of the United States; it dried later thereby the dust mixed with air, which caused adverse health problems. The Hurricane Katrina produced heaps of dirt in the cities, which would result in sequences of immunity problems. Although officials had declared that the city was safe enough to live, some scientists disagreed with the argument since they could find some poisoning substances in the soil (Palser). The Hurricane Katrina was the most ‘expensive’ natural disaster in the US history. The government spent billions of dollars for the rescue operations, financial assistance, and rehabilitation activities. There are no accurate data available on indirect financial losses such as job losses, impact on fishing and forestry, and other soil related consequences. The disaster also raised some political problems in US due to the delayed governmental response; and it led to the resignation of Michael brown, the head of FEMA. Likewise, great dilemma prevailed regarding the renovation of the city, New Orleans. The FEMA took considerable efforts in structuring schooling facilities in the city. Part II Rehabilitation After the flames of the disaster had been removed, there arose a cumbersome task of rebuilding the cities and providi ng rehabilitation to people. Since the Katrina completely swept away the whole and soul of the affected cities, the government had to take huge efforts to rebuild the town from ‘vacuum’. As we described above different politicians had different views on the matter. Similarly, some people argued that New Orleans should not be rebuilt (Palser, 2007, p.79). They pointed out that

Chapter Questions From Global health 101 richard skolnik book Essay - 10

Chapter Questions From Global health 101 richard skolnik book - Essay Example Hand washing with soap kills invisible germs and bacteria that can cause infections (155). The burden of disease from natural disasters and CHE’s is massive compared with other causes of illness, death and disability. There is a surging increase in number of deaths resulting from natural disasters and complex humanitarian as compared to natural causes of death (330). This is more so because CHE’s are associated with other diseases like cholera, typhoid and malnutrition. A disaster refers to an occurrence that disrupts the normal life of human beings by causing death and environmental destruction. Disasters always require intervention from outsiders in terms of food, shelter and clothing. Examples are volcanoes, floods and earthquake. Complex humanitarian emergency refers to a situation caused by political unrests resulting in instability in a country. This strife can result from wars or religious and ethnic clashes. The civilians suffer most in this case due to lack of necessities resulting to cropping up of refugees. Examples of countries that experience this phenomenon are Sudan, Bosnia, Liberia and Rwanda (319). A complex disaster is a situation where severe destruction happens thereby leaving the inhabitants helpless and in dire need of urgent assistance, e.g. tsunamis and hurricanes like it happened in Haiti. The disaster left many people in serious need of basic commodities. Many lives were lost (317). Avoiding some disasters can be hard, but they can be handled before they can cause massive destruction. Examples are floods and earthquake prone areas. The following are steps taken to reduce the magnitude of threats; Identify the risks that can occur like Floods, droughts and famine, develop theories of what is likely to happen based on past experience, set aside resources to appoint and train people to deal with the situation as soon as it occurs

Adapting to variable change in the market

Adapting to variable change in the market Adapting to change continuously is something thats very essential for an organization to survive and prosper into todays business environment. The focus of customer value is changing focus from product innovation to business innovation . Companies today need to evolve with customer needs, especially companies in the technology sector where innovation is fast paced and obsolescence is always around the corner .However trying to implement changes without adapting its strategy ,structure and processes to the change being implemented would almost surely lead to failure because a successful change needs to be a synergy of all the components /processes within the company. There are many companies which failed to capitalise on their success and lost out to their competitors over time because they were unable to successfully adapt themselves to the change . some of the examples of such stories are Canon , Nintendo and now Nokia ( Nintendo however managed to recover from the setback and that is something Nokia is looking to learn from/replicate) . Nintendo was the leader in gaming consoles till the years leading to 2000s but then Sony with it Playstation 2 took over the game and was the leader in gaming console but amongst the current generation of gaming consoles Nintendo has managed to recapture its position as the market leader with its offering the Nintendo Wii. Same was the case with Xerox , who was the leader in photocopier machines however it failed to evolve with the market and eventually lost out to Canon and Kodak and never manage to recapture its initial position of the market leader. The lesson to learn from the above cases is that being the market leader doesnt necessary guarantee you security from the environment , there is still a dire need to evolve with the market . infact the company at the front has to LEAD from the front . Changes the Source of Opportunities Innovation  is the weapon of choice for entrepreneurs.  Doing things in a different improved way or trying to do old things different is how organizations  leverage changes as a business opportunity. Innovation need to be approached systematically , with a watchful eye for changes and by looking for the opportunities that the company can capitalise on . In todays market innovation is the key driver towards success if the current success stories are anything to go by ranging from the iPhone to the Nintendo Wii.Companies look to knock out the competition by leading from the front . There are 2 trends that are successful and are popularly known as leap frog and second one is known as disruptive technology. The leapfrog strategy basically implies that you leap over the competition ,it might be developing new technologies or using a new business model to completely bypass the competition. The idea is as the name suggest to jump over the competition so that the competition . Disruptive technology is an innovation that disturbs the market forces. It basically refers to do innovations which improves on a product or service in a way not expected by the market , it typically could be by lowering the price or even offering a lower quality product which caters to a different customer segment such as in the case of Ryanair . Models of change management : There are a few models proposed for effective change management ,I will discuss a couple of them so that they can be leveraged to study the given case in a more analytical manner ,namely Kotters 8 step model and ADKAR model. Kotters 8 step model has the following steps: 1)a sense of urgency : for a change to occur there has to be a sense of urgency around the need for change .this help motivate other people so that you have more support you and help you build a sense of urgency . 2)form a powerful coalition: You have to make sure that the people around you believe in the change being necessary . This requires convincing key people in the organisation so you can garner their support and approval which helps you build momentum . For that you will need to find the non traditional /radical leaders ,people who are willing to adapt change and approach with an open mind . Once the coalition is formed , sense of urgency has to be continued and built upon . 3) create a vision for change : There would be many ideas/concepts for the change but the idea here is to link all of them so as to have a coherent vision for change providing a more holistic view of the change to occur and also a better understanding . This will the people around you understand your ideas better as well as help them help you better by having a better sense of your objectives. 4) communicate the vision : The vision needs to be communicated in a clear ,succinct manner on a frequent basis so it can compete with the other messages being broadcasted daily and stands out . 5)Take care of the obstacles : After all the above steps , it is highly likely that you will come across some obstacles maybe on an operational level or at a support level where you will have people questioning your ideas or resisting change , afterall its innate to every human to resist change as pointed out the only person who probably likes change is a wet baby. 6) create short term victories : the short terms victories as in positive feedback from the initial steps of change will help convince both the company and the support about the positive effects of the change being brought about . It will reaffirm the faith of your supporters as well as silence the critics . 7) build on your success: often many changes fail because victory is declared too early . Build on your initial success to keep up the momentum and see it through till the end . You should continuously be looking to make improvements. 8)ingrain the changes into the corporate culture : the changes need to be ingrained into the culture of the company to keep up the success else it will fail as soon as the processes and culture returns to its original state. So the change has to be maintained inorder to ensure long term success. The ADKAR model [Source: http://www.change-management.com/Tutorial-ADKAR-series-1.htm ] The ADKAR model What is change ? Change as per Websters dictionary is described as : To make something different in some particular way To replace with another To give a different direction , position etc And so on [Source : http://www.merriam-webster.com/ ] So what is change management  ? Change management can be defined in many different way but some of the best ones as per the KISS ( Keeping it short and simple ) are mentioned below  : The systematic approach and application of knowledge, tools and resources to deal with change. Change management means defining and adopting corporate strategies, structures, procedures and technologies to deal with changes in external conditions and the business environment. -SHRM Glossary of Human Resources Terms, www.shrm.org. Change management can be divided into three phases : Adapting to change Controlling the change /trying to manage it Effecting the change Successfully adapting to change is as crucial to the business world as it to the natural world , however in business the change is much more rapid and the pace at which an organization needs to adapt has to be much quicker than in the business world since the pace of change is also much quicker and the magnitude of change more extreme, so the change has to be well planned and well thought out to ensure maximum efficacy. Leading from the front [Source: http://www.gaebler.com/Leading-from-the-Front.htm] Leading from the front is a commonly used term in business jargon ,but if you stop and think about its exact meaning it can be interpreted in 2 ways: that you as a leader expect everyone else to follow the exact same route That you do whatever youve been asked to do ,exactly as per instructions Now these 2 interpretations may not seem that different at first but on deeper inspection it has to be realised that a person /organisation may only have x capacity or y resources and that these are the limitations of the organization. For e.g. no matter how many years or how many tournaments of golf you may have played in your life , its still next to impossible to be as good as Tiger Woods at golf because there are just some inherent resources which are at Tiger Woods disposal that you may not have such as a natural deep swing etc . so the second interpretation in most scenarios is the most feasible one on account of the fact that it takes into account the limitation factor. I will later extend on this argument to explain Nokias position in the current market . Leading from the front driven change Leading from the front driven change would imply going ahead and being a source of change . Instead of following a leader , you try and be the leader of that particular change .Its best explained with an example, like in case of Apple when they came up with the iPhone they went ahead and made the key differentiator to the be the user experience , they didnt go over board in the hardware war against Nokia instead they created a niche for themselves with the user experience . The key to the iPhone was the sheer simplicity and joy of using one , infact in terms of hardware Nokia was way ahead ,Nokia offered a camera of resolution of the magnitude of 5 megapixels with a xenon flash ( N82 announce 2007) as compared to a measly 2 mega pixel with no flash offered by the Apple iPhone first generation . There were a lot of similar points of comparison where in terms hardware Nokia was way ahead of the offering made by the Apple iPhone ( first generation ) and yet the Apple iPhone did really w ell despite being the companys first offering in the mobile phone market .( Apple sold 2,70,000 iPhones in first quarter and till Q1 2010 had sold over 42 million handsets put together)[Source : http://gorumors.com/crunchies/quarterly-breakup-of-iphone-sales/ ] What Apple did right was they didnt try and race ahead in the handset war against Nokia instead they formed a new class and started a new race where they were the leaders and now Nokia has to play catch up . Another example of such a story can be found in the gaming console wars between the 3 biggies of the industries : Nintendo , Microsoft and Sony. Nintendo , Sony and Microsoft each had their gaming console and while Microsoft and Sony were busy with their hardware wars for their Xbox and Playstation console in system in the mid 2005-2008 trying to outdo the other in terms of sheer processing power ,Nintendo decided to change game by concentrating on the gaming experience rather than the hardware specifications of the machine . What this resulted in was leading from the front driven change scenario . Nintendo lead from the front and while Microsoft and Sony were busy in their hardware specification war (which eventually escalated the prices of the consoles further up : eventually close to double the price of a Nintendo Wii ) came out with a gaming console which was so different (with the Wii stick ) that it actually has outsold both Xbox and Sony Playstation in the current generation of gaming consoles in terms of sales . As mentioned in the case this success story is something Nokia can learn from since Nintendo has been through a similar change of fortunes over the years, initially it was the leader, then it lost out to the play station and Xbox and then it recapitalised it position as the market leader in the current gaming console generation similar to what Nokia is planning on replicating through it new CEO.

The Holocaust :: essays research papers

"If we were not an eternal people before, we are an eternal people after the Holocaust, in both its very positive and very negative sense. We have not only survived, we have revived ourselves. In a very real way, we have won. We were victorious. But in a very real way, we have lost. We'll never recover what was lost. We can't assess what was lost. Who knows what beauty and grandeur six million could have contributed to the world? Who can measure it up? What standard do you use? How do you count it? How do you estimate it...? We lost. The world lost, whether they know it or admit it. It doesn't make any difference. And yet we won, we're going on." This quote is from the testimony of Fania Fenelon. The signs and symptoms that are among the Jews because of the Holocaust definitely characterize abnormality. These abnormalities include the physical effects, the spiritual effects, and the second generation. The physical effects were enormous among the Jews. The conditions of the camps defy description. The nutrition was worse than inadequate and the results being the well-known "musselmen": skeletons covered by skin. After the Jews in prison camps were freed, their diseases were treated as well as could be treated. Premature aging was one of the most prominent disabling effects of survivors. Digestive tract diseases were also very common because of the emotional disturbances and inadequate diet during their incarceration. The experience also placed them at risk of coronary diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, and arteriosclerosis. All of this was consistent with the premature aging and the atrophy of the heart muscle due to the extreme undernourishment during captivity. Spiritual concerns also followed the survivors of the Holocaust. The Jews had to face up to one of the most painful realities of all...What it means to be a Jew. They had to decide whether or not to remain a Jew. The Holocaust had threatened the Jewish people near extinction. A anger directed towards the Non-Jewish world was intense because they had been persecuted by Gentiles. The Holocaust had caused an apparently irreversible rupture in the Jewish-Christian relations. Jews felt and still feel enraged because their expectations of a decent world were shattered into pieces by the most, supposedly, civilized people in the world. "Where was God?" wrote Elie Wiesel, a question asked many times among the Jews. They felt

Brave New World and Anthem Essay

In both Brave New World and Anthem the underlying themes are very similar. The government controls every aspect of people’s lives, everyone is supposed to be perfectly happy with what role they are given, and the main character do not fit into what the government was deemed normal. While both books have these very similar traits, there are many differences as well; the way the government controls the people, as well as the form of government, the way people of both societies treat each other, and the situation in which the main characters are placed. In both Brave New World and Anthem the government controls everything about a person. In Brave New World the government has taken the ultimate step in controlling the people. The government has taken people’s right to have children away, and instead grow children in labs, dictating what the child’s life will be like from the time the sperm is introduced to the egg. The government adds enhancers if they want the child to come out smart, or things like alcohol to the embryo if they want it to come out stupid. Then the child is put through a series of conditioning treatments that make the child behave exactly how the government wants the child to (Huxley). In Anthem the government has also taken control of every aspect of te people’s lives. They are not as drastic as the government in Brave New World, but they put a child through a conditioning school, they choose the job that the person will do, and they choose when babies will be made. In Anthem the government is a council of leaders that have been chosen by the previous leaders to lead the people, and make them conform to the way that the council wants the people to think. There are councils in every city in Anthem as well as sub-council that control other aspects of life, for example the council of scholars rules over the new inventions, and studies conducted (Rand). Brave New World’s government is a series of people called controllers that rule over a continent, each controller is in charge of everything that happens in the continent be it new discoveries, or what kind of felly to show the people. The controllers have absolute power within their continents, but there is also a world council. Each controller is part of the world council and they make decisions that involve more than one controller’s continent. In the books the government has taken measures to see that everyone is perfectly happy, no matter what the cost of happiness is. In Anthem the children are taught from infancy that they would be perfectly happy if they loved their brothers and did their best to serve them. The children were punished if they tried to do something that their brothers would not like, or would not benefit the rest of the population. This method did not always work because some people where resistant to the ideas, and would always think in a different way that would make them unhappy. Also in Anthem the men are taught to stay happy they must serve their brothers fully and not interact with women at all. It is a crime to interact with women outside of the time of breeding. While in Brave New World the government took the children from birth and used conditioning as well as things like electric shocks to make the children think a certain way. This method is used until the children reach adulthood, and then to keep the population happy they are given a drug called soma. Soma is a mind altering drug ha makes the people happy an forget all their worries. The government convinced everyone that Soma was solution to the unhappiness in the world. Yet, this happiness is one reduced to sheer consumerism, just as politics in the brave new world is degraded to conformism. ( Diken Bulent). More tellingly yet, the only alternative set in the book against this sterile, suffocating civilization is religious fundamentalism (Diken Bulent). Another way that the government in Brave New World fools everyone into thinking that they are happy is by teaching the population that everyone belongs to everyone, and that having sex with as many people as possible as often as possible is a good thing, and is highly encouraged. The main characters in both Brave New World and Anthem do not fit into what the governments see as the perfect world. In Anthem Equality 7-2521 who was born into his society wanted to be a scholar, and help his brothers with his ideas, and inventions, but he was assigned to be a street sweeper. When Equality tried to change his life, and took the light bulb to the scholars hoping that they would accept him into their ranks and let him study with them. Equality was then punished and sentenced to death for trying to help his brothers better themselves, but escaped with his beloved and founded a new colony in which the mind would not be oppressed by the government. In Brave New World John is a boy from a reservation brought into society as an experiment, he does not understand the logic of the people, or the way they are until he meets the controller of the continent. While everyone that was raised in society is very promiscuous, and open with everything, John who was raised on the reservation only wants to be with one person, and keep his relationship private. This goes against everything that the people of civilization believe in. the differences eventually lead to John leaving the city to go live in a lighthouse far from the city. He eventually killed himself because he could no longer handle what was going on in his head, and the things going on around him. Brave New World and Anthem where very similar in the fact that they both had governments that dictated everything, things that where suppose to eliminate unhappiness, and had main characters that did not fit into the world in which they found themselves living. There where also pretty outstanding differences between the books as well though, the way the two societies viewed interactions with the opposite sex, the ways the governments where structured, and most of all the ending of the books. One character goes on to live his life with the one he loves, while the other commits suicide.

U.S. Force in Iraq essays

U.S. Force in Iraq essays The U.S. involvement in Iraq may go down as one of the most controversial wars in history even more so than the Vietnam War. Why? Because the basic premise for invading Iraq was false. There were no weapons of mass destruction, and so, there was no reason to invade the country, other than they were under the iron rule of a brutal and power-hungry dictator, of course. However, the question remains, is this a compelling reason to use force? Some might say yes, that it is the United States' duty to ensure democracy and civil rights across the globe. Others vehemently disagree. What most people around the world do agree on is that the U.S. use of force in Iraq has had enduring consequences on the way the U.S. is perceived around the world. Many consequences arise from the use of force in Iraq. One important consequence is the people's safety here at home. Military recruiting is down. Young people do not want to join the Armed Forces when it is quite clear they could die in Iraq or Afghanistan (or any number of places, for that matter). This shortage results in fewer qualified members of the armed forces, and leaves fewer in America to protect against terrorism and attack. Thus, the American military is spread thin, and will be spread even thinner when National Guard troops are deployed to the U.S. Mexican border to guard against illegal entrance next month. This leaves the country more vulnerable to terrorism and natural disaster. Witness the results of Hurricane Katrina, where it took days for emergency crews, including National Guard troops, to enter the city and begin a rescue effort. This indicates just how thinly the military is spread, and this is a direct result of U.S. force in Iraq. Another important consequence of U.S. involvement is the deaths of over 2,600 coalition force members. That includes 2,463 Americans, as of May 25, 2006. Almost 18,000 military personnel have been wounded during the war, ...

British Airlines Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1

British Airlines - Essay Example Moreover, the board was to take control of other smaller regional airlines such as Cambrian Airways, from  Cardiff, and  Northeast Airlines, to be based at  Newcastle upon Tyne.  Later on in 1974, all the four airlines were merged to form one major airline known as British Airways (British Airways 1998; British Airways 2006a, British Airways 2006b). British Airways remained to be a parasternal until 1987 when the company was privatized by the conservative government through the sale of its shares to members of the public. The national airline later on expanded by the acquisition of British Caledonian  in 1987 and  Dan-Air, and Gatwick-based carrier, in 1992 (British Airways 1995a; British Airways 2004; Anonymous 2002; Anonymous 2011; Bannan 2007). Since its formation in 1971, the company has long been one of the largest customers of Boeing aircrafts, which are manufactured in the United States. However, beginning August 1998, the company transformed and began purchasing aircrafts from Airbus, which are manufactured in the larger European countries (British Airways 2010a; 2010b; British Airways 2010c). Their first order involved the purchase of 59 Airbus A320 family aircrafts in the same year. Later on in 2007, the aircraft bought twelve more Airbus A380s (Benady 2008; British Airways 2000a; British Airways 2004a). However, in the same year, it purchased an additional 24 Boeing 787 Dreamliner to replace its old fleet. A vital part of the British airlines planes is the 52 Boeing 747-400 which it uses both for its domestic and regional flights. This makes it the largest operator in its category in the world (British Airways 2004b; British Airways 2004c; British Airways 2003). In order for British Airways to achieve such a huge milestone, it has developed various marketing strategies that are in line with the various marketing theories. One of the major marketing tools that it uses is the SWOT

Proposal Assignment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1

Proposal Assignment - Essay Example The proposal is worth more research to draw a line between the 2 worlds. In this proposal, I will be in support of the Contemporary Reality. The vital question in preparing this research is; is the present world heading to the cyber world in the near or far future? What is cyber world and where is it based? The answer to the first question is no. The Cyber world is a form of entertainment or literature of science fiction in the setting of the near future. It focuses on the low life and high technology. It is characterized by advanced science like cybernetics and information technology (Campbell, 142). This goes hand in hand with radical change in the social order and a breakdown degree. This is not the case in the contemporary world of reality where everything is normally in the present form. In the real world, technology is not us updated as is put in cyber world and life is just what is expected in the typical world. The concept of having advanced science is reachable in the far future or in some instances might not be attainable. The technology is expected to grow at run of the mill rate in contrast with the one in th e cyber world. There are a few challenges I will expect to get while researching my work. First, Cyber world tends to focus on conflict among the mega corporations, hackers and artificial intelligences. This is based in the setting of near-future instead of far-future (Campbell, 157). This is something that is at present or is expected to happen soon in some parts of the world. Thus, I might have a hard time developing an excellent argument on this concept. The setting of cyber world is also in a level where the service sector is generating more wealth in comparison to the manufacturing sector. This is something that has happened in the developed countries like Japan making it difficult to establish a good

Ethical Implication of Financial Decisions Essay

Ethical Implication of Financial Decisions - Essay Example Insider trading is trading of a company’s stock and other securities such as bonds and stock options by individuals who are related to a business (Vataliya, 2009). The individuals are assumed to have the means of accessing information that is not public that is directly related to the company. One of the most well-known insider cases today is that involving a TV tycoon Martha Stewart. She was accused of receiving inside information. Using the information Martha sold the shares of ImClone drugs a day before the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) denied the approval of the drug.In some countries, trading by corporate insiders such as managers, large shareholders, and directors can be legal if the trading is done in ways that do not take advantage of information that is not meant for the public that would eventually be harmful to the confidence of the investors. However, insider trading presents unethical issues in most cases. First, insider trading is an unfair pra ctice to honest traders. The method ensures that the information is only available to some shareholders, thus depriving others the opportunity to use the information to make the right investment decision.Insider trading is also a breach of fiduciary and other relationship of confidence and trust. The practice goes against the property rights in any information and dealing in such information can be considered to be an abuse of property rights. Arguably, insiders have an ethical duty to act in the interests of the shareholders (Lussier, 2012).

Law enforcement today Essay Example for Free

Law enforcement today Essay Law enforcement officers have a very important role in society. They have a job that involves lots of decision making and using personal judgment. Law officers have many duties while at work. Law officers have to decide whether or not someone is breaking the law and how they will enforce the situation. Law officers are sometimes expected to be perfect. They have to catch all the bad guys and save all the innocent. Unfortunately it doesnt always work that way but officers try to do the best of their ability. All officers are different in that some are more strict and you cant get away with as much, and others are very laid back and you are apt to get a way with more. I believe all officers should be strict when it comes to safety issues, and peoples health is at risk. I also believe officers should try and teach you what is against the law before you are punished, like warnings should be issued when no one is in harms way. Some officers think they are immortal when they put on a badge, sometimes officers forget what theyre there for and go too far. There are many cases when people have been falsely abused by officers for no reason. All people have rights, even when you have committed a crime. You are read your rights when you get arrested and no one can take those rights away from you. If an officer violates those rights, you will probably win you case because of it. I think the laws and rules citizens have to follow are reasonable. To run a country successfully, you need to have laws that cover everything. People also need to educate themselves on what the laws are. In this country, you are innocent until proven guilty. Everyone also has a right to a trial before a jury when you have been accused of a crime. Each case obviously has its own circumstances, and thats why everyone gets a trial. I think the more serious the crime, the less space or freedom you have. Obviously there are different penalties for speeding and murder. They say the crime should fit the punishment. I think the penalties in this country are very fair. I dont think to many people get off too easy or too harshly. I believe the punishment system is pretty accurate in this country. I think a lot of police work is just plain old confidence. Criminals are going to take the state police more seriously than the police in a little town in the middle of nowhere. Law enforcement officers have a bad reputation of being fat, out of shape, eating donuts, sitting at a desk and so on. Some officers you see  are definently out of shape but they might have great knowledge in the field of law enforcement. I think all officers who go on patrol should have to pass a physical test as well as a written test each year to be certified. Im not saying out of shape officers should be fired, but they shouldnt be on patrol. They could be put at a desk or do detective like work. I think officers should be in good shape and look intimidating towards criminals. I think that would cut crime rates down. Criminals would be less apt to rob a bank if they knew a young, in shape, fast cop was chasing them rather than if a three hundred pound, forty six year old cop was. All these things I just mentioned would probably help reduce crime, but they are just opinions. I truly believe law officers today do a good job at what they do and deserve a tremendous amount of respect for it. Being a law officer is not only a risky job but it is kind of heroic in a way. I think it takes a special person to be a law officer and not everyone should able to be one.

The Epidemic of AIDS in the African-American Community :: Health Medical HIV Diseases Essays

In the early 1980's, many gay men were found to suffer from Kaposi's sarcoma, a cancer usually associated with elderly men of Mediterranean ethnicity. Eventually the gay men wasted away and died. Word began to spread throughout the homosexual community that gay men were dying of an otherwise rare cancer. The medical community began to refer to this syndrome by the colloquialism "Gay Cancer". As medical scientists researched, they discovered that the syndrome included other manifestations, such as Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP). A rare form of pneumonia caused by protozoa, its name was changed to "GRID", or Gay Related Immune Deficiency. The effect that the stigma of homosexuality had on the general public's perception and handling of the disease cannot be overlooked. Within the medical community, it quickly became apparent that the disease was not specific to gay men (as blood transfusion patients, heroin users, heterosexual women and newborn babies became added to the list of afflicted), and the renamed the syndrome (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) in misconception holds that the disease was introduced by a gay male flight attendant, named Gaetan Dugas, referred to as "Patient Zero". However, subsequent research has revealed that there were cases of AIDS much earlier than initially known. It has also been theorized that a series of inoculations against hepatitis that were performed in the gay community of San Francisco were tainted with HIV. There is a high correlation between recipients of that vaccination and initial cases of AIDS, though this of course has never been proven to be accurate. Since the turn of the century, the overall health of all Americans has improved substantially. Although advances in medical and scientific technology have improved the health status of the American people, there is a growing concern and recognition that African-Americans have not benefited equally from the fruits of science. Whereas these facts are not "new news," it is apparent that most of the public and the scientific community are not fully aware of the full impact of these problems. There are government agencies that aim to provide health services to minorities: the Office of Minority Health (which seeks to develop health policies beneficial to minorities) and the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (which seeks to promote minority health and eliminate health disparities). On June 23, 2004 President George W. Bush spoke at a press conference in Philadelphia, Pa. where he announced his latest HIV/AIDS initiative.

Employer And Employee Relation

1. Given Bandag Auto’s size, and anything else you know about it, explain why and how the human resource management function should be reorganized. Answer: Bandag automotive is a family oriented business that has great potential for maximum growth. The only issue is that the human resource management function there is not operated in a productive way. Bandag automotive should focus on a brand new strategy to develop a more structured and organized human resource unit. The management function should be able to recruit great employees, handle payroll, administer benefits, and also provide services, such as help resolve work related problems. A new human resource management function could create a positive impact on the company. 2. Recommend what Bandag should change and/or improve upon regarding the current HR systems, forms, and practices the company now uses. Answer: Bandag should start over fresh with a whole new HR firm one that is experienced, and service above standards of majority HR firms. Jim should prepare a meeting with his HR firm to be sure the policies work along with his company strategy. The Human resource team should consists of several different members with similar but different titles. For example, Jim would be the person to decide who will be the executive assistant, HR manager, and HR representative the one that assist with recruiting employees for the company. These practices will make a huge improvement toward Bandag HR department, by providing quality services to the company and its employees. 3. Jim fired an employee for creating what the manager called a poisonous relationship. Explain whether or not the employee has a legitimate claim against the company and the actions the company should take. Answer: Jim firing the employee Henry Jacques, because he was having problems interacting with co-workers, in my opinion was wrong. Although, looking at the issue in a business perspective, Henry Jacques was not getting along with his co-workers, which did create a bad working environment. Also, he later reported that he had mental issues, in which was never mention to management before he was terminated. Therefore, Henry does not have a legitimate claim against the company, because it is the law to notify your employer of any mental illness or disabilities. For future incidents the actions the company should take in this type of situation, is to move the employee to another department, and if the problem persist give the employee a final and after that proceed to termination. If Jim would have used that alternative, the outcome of this situation would have probably turned out better. 4. Miriam, the controller, is basically claiming that the company is retaliating against her for being pregnant, and that the fact that the company raised performance issues was just a smokescreen. Explain whether or not the EEOC and/or courts would agree with her and the actions the company should take now. Answer: In the situation with Miriam, she was fired for a legitimate reason because of her misconduct at work. The EEOC would not agree with her considering those circumstances. Miriam is trying to use her pregnancy as an excuse, in which have nothing to do with her termination. In this situation the company should make sure the allegations against her are legit, and have proof present to the courts or EEOC. If the company cannot provide proof then this will be a case to be turned around in favor of Miriam. . An employee who is deaf has asked to switch jobs to be a delivery person and he was turned down. He is now threatening to sue. Recommend what the company should do and describe why. Answer: The truck maintenance employee who was turned down A truck maintenance employee who is deaf, applied for a job driving one of Bandag’s distribution trucks, and Jim directly t urned him down because of his disability. We believe that the employee will win if he sues Jim, unless Jim can prove that the employee was denied because there were more qualified applicants and in no way because of his disability. Yet it is still pretty risky because the court system is very strict about the Americans with Disabilities Act. If the deaf employee can prove that Jim thinks that is absurd for a disabled person to drive a truck, he will win and cause monetary and public damages to the company. Our solution to mitigate the problem is to rescreen all applicants, including the employee to see if he is qualified for the job. If he is, offer him the job if he is still interested, and he will hopefully drop the case.
